The landscape is beautiful and varied. On its coasts, splendid beaches alternate with rugged limestone bluffs which are followed inland by verdant valleys and mountain chains which can rise to the 3, 175 mts elevation of Duarte Peak, the tallest mountain on the island as well as in the Antilles.
In recent years, the tourism sector has experienced a period of booming development, due to the lure of its exquisite beaches and other attractions and to the favorable pricing of accommodations.
The Dominican economy is relatively strong when compared to those of the other Caribbean and Latin American countries.
It has been traditionally characterized by its exports of cane sugar, coffee, cocoa, tobacco and banana, but has grown in recent years to include manufactured goods and tourism.
The city of Santo Domingo de Guzman is the first permanent settlement in the New World, and was founded by Bartholomew Columbus, Christophers brother, in 1496. It is a city steeped in history, which is evidenced by its superb Colonial Zone with its many firsts: first cathedral, Santa Maria la Menor, built in 1540; first palace, the Alcazar de Colon, official residence of Diego Columbus, son of the Discoverer; first hospital, San Nicolas di Bari, first monasteries of the orders, Franciscan and Dominican; first stone fortress with tower of homage (keep), the Ozama Fort; first port and warehouses, Las Atarazanas. Many narrow, cobble-stoned streets and plazas such as Las Damas (the Ladies) Street, El Conde (the Count) Street, Columbus Park, and Plaza Espana, afford you a unique glimpse into the New Worlds earliest history with its numerous museums, ruins, and forts.
The citys night life is very active, with plenty of gourmet dining options running the full range of international cuisine: Spanish, Italian, French, Mediterranean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, and traditional Dominican Creole cooking.
After enjoying a sumptuous meal, it is time to go bar-hopping through the many pubs and nightclubs that can be found in the Colonial Zone and throughout the city, and which are always well-attended by the fun-loving Dominican people.
